Carmina update

It comes up every so often…”So, Jessica, weren’t you writing a novel or something?”

Why yes, I was. Have been. Am. Will be.

Carmina, a novel for teens about a girl who moves to Brooklyn in the middle of her freshman year of high school, has been the one thing I haven’t been able to finish these last couple of years. But no longer! I’ve finished a rough draft of the thing (pretty rough, but it exists!), and plan to finish for reals by the end of the summer. Since I started this project, just about everything about it has changed; plot, characters, backstory. If I talked to you about it a year or two ago, forget everything I told you. it’s not the book it was at the time.

There’s a lesson in all this: writing prose is not similar to writing comics, and if you like doing one, you may still not like doing the other. Believe me, I know.

Here I am, in the home stretch, on my friends Jorge and Clarisa’s orange couch in Mexico City a few weeks ago. I barely left that spot for four days.
